Chance

It’s Friday and I’ve been working at the school exactly one week now. I help Lisa finish up her last day and the staff give her a tearful send off after school. She gets all the usual leaving gifts, and there are plenty of tearful faces around to show that Lisa will be missed. I’ve only worked with her a week myself, but even I find myself tearing up a little. Principle Ellen says a few nice things about Lisa in the staff room, and Lisa tries her best not to break down into floods of tears. She fails, but we all have a good laugh about it. Spirits are high and I am feeling good. Lisa says goodbye, and one of her girlfriend teachers from geography escorts her off the school premises and onto pastures new. The rest of the teachers disband back to their classrooms to finish up whatever work needs marking before the weekend.

I make the short walk to the classroom that is now mine. Once there, I walk through the empty rows and brush my fingers over the small wooden desks. Come Monday this will be Ms. Tanner’s room. I feel a swell of pride in my chest at seeing how far I’ve come. I revel in the feeling for a moment before sitting back at my desk and finishing my marking for the week. Thirty minutes later I’ve got all my work done and decide that it’s time to head on home.

As the days have trickled by, Rogan has become more and more generous in helping me get back on my feet. He lent me his spare car until I can get myself a replacement. I had the rust bucket towed a few days ago and in it’s spot now sits the brand new Mercedes that is on loan from Rogan.

I start the car up and head on home, and then a pang of worry fills my stomach. It’s Friday, and the goons from earlier in the week said they’d be back today. Up until now I’d barely given their distant threats any real thought. I’ve been so busy settling into my new job and messing around with Rogan after school, that my mind has barely had time to settle on those two idiots.

I must admit that I’m a little nervous to get home and find those idiots waiting for me, but the nerves are merely a thread next to the injustice and anger I feel about it. I almost hope they do show their faces again, because I will make them damn well regret it.

Upon arriving home, there’s no sign of dumb and dumber. I move my things from the car to my house and then I head over to Rogan’s to start cleaning. He answers the door with his phone on his shoulder.

“Hey. Come on in. I’m just taking care of some business, but I’ll be with you in a minute.”

I slide inside and Rogan shuts the door behind me. Although it’s only been a few days, we’ve settled into a nice little routine.
